Indonesia woman irked by mosque noise convicted of blasphemy

The ethnic Chinese lady's objection was trailed by assault on Buddhist places of worship in Sumatra

Ethnic Chinese woman Meiliana reacts during her sentencing hearing at a district court in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018.

An Indonesian court has condemned a lady who griped about a boisterous mosque to year and a half in jail for irreverence.

The ethnic Chinese lady, Meiliana, burst into tears as a judge reported the sentence Tuesday. She was taken from the court in binds.

Prosecutors said the 44-year-old respondent abused Indonesia's criminal code by carrying out impiety against Islam, the overwhelming confidence in Indonesia.

Crowds consumed and stripped no less than 14 Buddhist sanctuaries all through Tanjung Balai, a port town on Sumatra, in a July 2016 mob following reports of Meiliana's grumbling about a mosque's boisterous amplifiers.

The lady's attorney said the sentence would be offered.
